I am getting close to the end of book one. Another chapter and we'll be there, folks. This is exciting. I have set for myself the dream of finishing by Christmas. Of course, this is a busy season with lots of other things to do, but I've started the last chapter at least. I'm sooooo getting there!

Which has made me look back. I was thirteen when I started this voyage. I've felt really rotten over the twenty-four years since then that it's taken me so long to get to this point. Then I looked at the process a little harder. This is what I saw:

Four years ago on the Saturday after Thanksgiving is when I can really be said to have begun writing in earnest. I've said so in the past, and I realize now that it's quite true. Four years and sixteen days ago. The material I have from before that has been almost entirely re-written. Oh there are surviving scraps, of course, but most of it's new. The earlier years were more like gestation than anything else.

Now four years is hardly lightning speed, but it's better than twenty-four years. Nothing to be ashamed of. Rather the opposite, in fact. I'm feeling pretty good about the whole thing. Not finishing by Christmas won't be devastating, but I don't think it's an unrealistic goal. That'll make it four years and one month.

Not too shabby.

I so rawk!

Anybody on these forums who just happens to be in Butte on December the twenty-seventh is formally and cordially invited to a party at Josie's House.

No, seriously. There's gonna be a party. Please come.

You guys have helped me through this, held me up, encouraged me, criticized me when I needed it and just were plain wonderful. It would have taken a lot more than four years without your help and encouragement and feedback and community. I owe you guys an immense debt of gratitude. I wanna party thereat. And I just happen to know that someone who otherwise couldn't come is going to be here on the 27th, so... be there or be square, y'alls!

Yes! Party! Party! Congrats. This will be much fun.

(Now that I've finally read the boards and know what's happening the 27th!)
